District of Columbia Tax Exemption Setup for Corporation

If you are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, you are eligible to apply for exemption from the District of Columbia Corporate Income and Franchise Tax, as well as Sales & Use Tax on purchases of goods or services. To apply, you must file an Application for Exemption (Form FR-164) with the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue online and provide the copies of the organization's: (1) IRS determination Letter, (2) Certificate of Incorporation or Certificate of Authority, and (3) A copy of the lease that meets the physical location requirements (for sales tax exemptions).

  1. Create MyTax Online Account

    If you do not already have an online MyTax DC account, navigate to the MyTax DC homepage and click on "Sign-up for MyTax.DC.gov" to create a new account.

  2. File Application For Exemption Online

    Log in to your MyTax DC online account, then navigate to the "More..." tab. Then, under the Payments & Returns section, click "Request for Exemption to File (FR-164)."

District of Columbia Sales Tax Setup for PLLC, Professional Corporation, LLP, LLC, Corporation

If you sell tangible personal property or taxable services in DC, you are required to register with the Office of Tax and Revenue to collect and pay sales tax. If you are an out-of-state entity with at least 200 retail transactions or $100,000 in DC gross receipts for the current or previous calendar year, you have nexus for the purpose of sales tax.

If you have a sales tax account in DC, you have to file sales tax returns electronically through the MyTax DC portal. Businesses are assigned a filing frequency of annual, quarterly, or monthly by Office of Tax and Revenue based on their sales tax liability.
